It’s a common enough story, and it goes something like this:
You’re helplessly staring at the clock as yet another deadline looms.
Your stomach is squirming with anxiety as if a nest of vipers has taken up residents.
You’re dreading yet another frosty glare on your boss’s face for breaking another promise that you’ll hand in your work on time.
Dejectedly, you slump onto your home office chair with the best intentions to finally get started.
But that’s when the real problem starts.
Because the moment your butt hits the chair, that little tantalising voice in the back of your head starts whispering:
“Go on, just have a little peak at PornHub. It’s been ages, and you deserve a treat now and then. Besides, what harm can it do?”
“No, no, no! That’s what got me in trouble the last time”, you protest angrily.
You straighten up your back, crack your knuckles and get a steely look that Captain America would be proud of on your face.
“Right, let’s get this done!”
Unfortunately, that’s a game that most of us lose, right?
Because that coaxing little voice can quickly become a screeching howl that demands we drop everything RIGHT NOW and get straight on PornHub.
But here’s the interesting thing about the causes of porn addiction:
The derailment of your good intentions to crack on with your work wasn’t your fault.
More often than not, you were unaware of the internal battle against the most common causes of porn addiction.
In this post, you’re going to discover the 48 little-known causes of porn addiction to build up a picture of your porn triggers. As a result, you’ll know exactly what you need to avoid to minimise the risk of being tempted by porn ever again!
But, before we get to that…
Want to play a quick game called Spot the Trigger?
Here’s how spot the trigger works:
I’d like you to read through the intro again and see how many triggers you can find.
Don’t worry; it won’t take you more than three minutes.
Plus, this simple exercise will power up your awareness so that you can quickly discover your causes of porn addiction later in the post.
Are you game?
Have you got your answer ready?
Tut, tut, if you skipped ahead and peaked at the answers below, you are no fun! :-)
Believe it or not, there were four porn triggers:
-
Stress - the feeling in the stomach like a family of vipers
Conflict - the frosty disapproval on the boss’s face
Reward - it’s been ages, and you deserve a treat.
Environmental - the butt hitting the desk chair.
The butt hitting the desk chair?
Seriously, people struggling to break free of a porn addiction often don’t make the connection that their environment is a massive trigger. You see, our brains develop unconscious associations when we’re sitting down to watch porn.
For example, suppose you usually watch porn on your mobile while sitting on your living room sofa. Basically, your brain can become conditioned to rub its metaphorical hands together in eager anticipation whenever you sit on your couch because you unconsciously think you’re preparing for an epic porn-viewing session. In other words, sitting on your sofa and the surroundings have become a huge trigger.
Put simply, getting to grips with the causes of porn addiction is a significant step towards long-term recovery.
Why?
Knowing your triggers can help you avoid them, deactivate them using a super-simple strategy called a reaction sequence, and take action to reduce the risk of being triggered in the future.
Are you ready to discover your porn triggers?

Grab yourself something to take notes
I encourage you to review the porn trigger list. And evaluate the intensity of the trigger on a scale from 1 to 10* during the previous two weeks.
Write down any triggers that are at a >= level 7 on the scale, including their level of intensity, as you’ll be using this information later to gain mastery over your triggers.
* How to use the Scale

If you entered a 1 on the scale, then this would be the equivalent of stating that “this trigger has not resulted in viewing porn and/or masturbating.”
If you entered a 5 on the scale, then this would be the equivalent of stating that “this trigger has increased the probability of viewing porn and/or masturbating.”
If you entered a 10 on the scale, then this would be the equivalent of stating that “this trigger resulted in viewing porn and/or masturbating.”
